Class size on the rise. Teacher layoffs coming. Local schools closing. Music and PE programs cut. School budgets slashed…
With all the negative headlines bombarding us daily about the current plight of education, it’s easy to get depressed and overwhelmed. Knowing that so many of us are being impacted by these budget cuts, it’s a difficult subject to ignore. Many outstanding new teachers are not getting contracts for next year, extra-curricular programs are being cut and our class size is on the rise again. It is easy to lose focus on what matters most: teaching our children.
Whatever that means to you, whether it’s getting involved politically or simply showing up to work each day with positive energy and a love of teaching and learning, we encourage you to stay focused on the children. Now more than ever before we must make the most out of every day we have with these children. As our good friend, Reggie Routman, says, “Teach with a sense of urgency.” We must be urgent in our assessments. We must be urgent in our teaching. We must be urgent in loving these children.
We know we can’t change the many challenges that face education today, but we hope to help inspire and equip you to do your very best teaching. Please find these updates helpful and useful. In this issue you will find new books, another cleverly designed classroom, as well as information about our new book, The Café Book, to help you teach intentionally and with a sense of purpose, especially in these tough times.
Warmly,

The 2 Sisters
