IRA 2006, Our Latest Learning
Richard Allington Key Note
The president of IRA this year has been Richard Allington. His opening remark was “The single most important factor on student achievement is the teacher”.
Check out these links to some of the articles he has written.
- The single most important factor on student achievement is the teacher.
- 1960 Curriculum material mattered more than the teacher, this restricts the capacity for teachers to act upon their expertise.
- There can be no accountability without autonomy.
- As teacher expertise improves all students improve?
- Teachers have to be able to adapt on the fly.
- Laser like precision on developing teachers, focus on variables.
- Caring, empathy, inspiration.
Jonathan Kozol author of Savage Inequalities
This dynamic, passionate, speaker and writer had us laughing with his real life descriptions of students he works with and crying after examples of inequity that we see in our schools. Some of his quotes we loved:
- I think teachers do the best thing there is to do on earth.
- Children like their teachers and grown-up friends to look nice.
- In the eyes of God our children are of equal value, in the eyes of America they are not.
- You can teach literacy best if you love your product.
- School cannot survive without caring, joyful, incandescent teachers
Check out his site! It is a great resource.
Cathy Collins Block and Dr. John N. Mangieri - Vocabulary
We heard Cathy and John speak last year at IRA about vocabulary and knew we had to make this session this year. These researchers are helping us discover the many facts of vocabulary instruction and the learning of words. Cathy and John’s presentation was precise and to the point. Starting with their first point.. “Regardless of the type of learner, kids of average or lower ability, for them to retain a skill on long term basis, we have to teach that skill a minimum of 6 consecutive times.” Check out their powerpoint.
