Our Favorite Things | Things and What Else
... and the kitchen sink

2007

Sometimes we have other favorite things beside books,  these things make our classrooms run smoother, and sometimes they make our lives  just plain fun!  Keep watching for some of our favorites.

Book Boxes

Many of you have written to ask us what our book boxes look like. This is the type of book boxes we use in our classrooms.  We put them on our supply list, and then purchase some ourselves.  If you look through the photos in our book, you will notice the children using  a variety of different book boxes.

Chart Rack

Sheryl Mills (bottom left), from Peninsula School District in Washington State, came up with this creative and affordable idea.  She wanted to have a chart rack to hold pads of chart paper that sat low to the ground in her gathering space.  As she was walking through a local home improvement store, she saw this.

It occurred to her that this was a perfect solution!

Supplies:

  • 2 pieces of plywood cut to the preferred size (the home improvement store even cut it for her!)
  • 2 hinges to attach the two pieces together at the top
  • 2 pieces of chain

GREAT idea Sheryl – thanks for sharing!

Chimes

One of our favorite ways to get the attention of our children in the classroom is by ringing chimes. We have them hanging in strategic places around the room, and one of our favorites:  the tranquility desk chime -

Using this soft, melodic tune certainly gets student’s attention yet it does so in a way that isn’t loud and upsetting to our highly auditory children.

Divider Sheets

We LOVE office supplies! (it must be a teacher thing) Each year we take great care creating our classroom conferring notebook.  This year we feel like we hit the jackpot with these new favorite divider sheets for our notebook.  We love the shape of them, the fact that they are translucent and that the company will send a template right to your e-mail making  it oh-so-easy to create professional printed labels!

Garret Popcorn

One of our favorite things in the world is Garret Popcorn in Chicago. Each time we are lucky enough to visit that beautiful city, our time includes standing in line (up to 30 minutes) for their Chicago Blend – an amazing taste sensation of sweet caramel corn and slightly salty cheddar cheese. WOW!!! We were so delighted to find out that one can order this popcorn that we dream about online!

Poesy

Our family recently gave us both  bracelets with a quote by one of our favorite quotable people – Henry David Thoreau. The quote says:  Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.  Live the life you’ve imagined.   These are words we try to live by!  The bracelet is called a “poesy” or a short poem or sentiment decoratively inscribed on rings, or jewelry.  What a great gift made by dvb New York

Tom Chapin

One of our favorite artists is Tom Chapin (yes, Harry Chapin’s brother)  He has a wide variety of CDs that are great for older as well as younger students.

This month, we feature Tom Chapin's CD, Mother Earth.  Our family has a long tradition of singing the song Thanksgiving Day before we celebrate Thanksgiving Dinner together.  We print off the words, turn up the CD and sing away.  With a large family and often many extended family and friends gathering with us, it is a beautiful song that everyone can sing easily!  You can listen to this song and a sampling of others on the CD by going to this link and scrolling down to the bottom of the page where it says Listen to Samples.

Zip Pen

Are you ever frustrated when you are working on a computer and have to stop, find a pen to make a note, begin typing again, just to find that once again you need to stop and find the pesky pen to make another note? This Zip Pen is a perfect way to solve that problem!  (I’m using one right now!!) Just slip it on your middle finger.  It stays out of the way while you are typing, but as soon as you need to switch to writing, it is ready at the perfect angle to wrap your other fingers around and write away!  No more searching for that lost pen!
