Review and Refine Daily 5 Behaviors

During some fascinating conversations with teachers in Portland, it came to our attention that some teachers who where trying Daily 5 for the first time, were putting too much pressure on themselves to get through all the five rounds of Daily 5.

After some great dialogue, they were relieved to hear that teachers (and more importantly students) work through Daily 5 at different paces. One of the wonderful things about Daily 5 is that you can always back up and review or re-teach behaviors to reinforce positive stamina.

Especially as we head into the holiday season, with breaks in the school schedule, it is very important to back up and review if necessary. The more you push through, without the students on board, the more you will be reinforcing and practicing the wrong behaviors.

Feel free to get the “I Chart” back out that you made as a class and review before dismissing for Daily 5. A bit of review and practice now, means peace and efficiency in the classroom in the days that follow.

I LOVE the Daily 5!  It is a wonderfully practical and effective way to engage my students in meaningful literacy activities while giving me a chance to work with small groups and individuals.  It  has transformed the way  I teach reading!
