Little gems that make us sit up and take notice

Organizing the class library

As the end of each school year draws to a close we have our children take charge of organizing the classroom library.  Over the course of a couple of weeks or even each day for one week, as a class we brainstorm the best way to organize our books.

This year the class has decided that they love the organizational system devised by last year’s group and wish to keep it.  We have picture books divided into tubs of  Very Beginning, Easy and Medium.  There is a non-fiction section divided by topic and chapter books by Beginning and Hard.  We also have a variety of tubs organized by topic, author or genre such as Judy Moody, Magic Tree house, ABC books, Superheroes, Bionicals, Joke books etc.

Once the organizational system is decided upon, each student chooses a tub to be the “the expert” of.  We post their names so that when we find a book that fits into their category we give it to them for correct placement.

This is one of those great “right brain” day activities which we spend a bit of time on each day.  The results?  An organized classroom library by the end of the school and built in experts who will come back the following year to teach the new students “the ropes” of our library organizational system and who will even volunteer to help keep it going throughout the year – Ahh Haa!

I LOVE the Daily 5!  It is a wonderfully practical and effective way to engage my students in meaningful literacy activities while giving me a chance to work with small groups and individuals.  It  has transformed the way  I teach reading!
