Janet Swenland, from Nine Mile School District shared at the Spokane Workshop about books from “The Apprentice Model” that could be used to help anchor children’s learning about different behaviors. Here were her comments.
For books that model being independent and making the right choices all on their own: Brave Irene and The Teddy Bear
For books that show models of behaviors that take place due to a reward: Tops and Bottoms and The Wolf’s Chicken Stew
For books that model a character who is not independent and still needs someone to tell them how to behave: NO David Books
We spent time in Spokane talking about room arrangement. Many teachers have moved to eliminating many student desks or tables to provide a more flexible learning environment. Kathy Lemargie, from Ephrata School District, shared her strategy for how to handle those times when more tables are needed in the classroom.
“A handy tool for me is card tables! They are easy to store and the students love to set them up and quickly put them away. I made table cloths that can be thrown in the laundry on the weekends. These tables are used for games, art projects, centers…..we even use them for staff Bunko parties once a month!
Message from The 2 Sisters
It was great to see so many of you at beautiful Mt. Spokane High School for the WSASCD sponsored Daily 5 class! Thanks for joining us as we spent a fast-paced, wonderful day learning about the Big Picture of reading, 10 Steps to Independence, the 80/20 research regarding time children spend on reading practice and instruction, the I PICK method to teaching children to choose good-fit books how to manage your literacy block with Daily 5 and much more!
We loved your synthesizing words of our day together: assumptions, independence, expectations and of course DRP (drip J )
For those of you who didn’t get a book and wanted one, just go to the link on our site and you can orders yours directly from Stenhouse.
We hope you will check back frequently for more great handouts, teaching ideas, on-line classes and book studies, inspiration and fun!
Thanks again to WSASCD for hosting this great event. Remember to check out their website: http://washingtonstate.ascd.org
It was a great day!
Warmly,

Gail and Joan
